The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is a 2,800-acre environmental research and educational facility operated by the Smithsonian Institute. The Center is located on the Rhode and West Rivers near Edgewater, MD, placing it in the perfect location to study the ecosystems of coastal zones. The installation of Solaire Generation’s Solaire 360 S™ canopies contributed towards the Center’s achievement of 17 out of 17 credits for the energy portion of the LEED certification, supporting the Center’s attainment of LEED Platinum status. In addition, the carports serve as an educational display for visitors to the Center. The carports provide shade in the summer, incorporate a snow guard for safety in the winter, and provide parking lot lighting year-round through integrated LED fixtures. This project was nominated for the Intersolar North America 2015 Award.
